Ashland City's only detective in a coma

By MATT ANDERSON • Gannett Tennessee • March 14, 2008

  • ASHLAND CITY — The 15-member Ashland City Police Department is a tight-knit group, with officers who vacation together and where friendships predate careers.
  • As the department's only detective lies in a coma and on a respirator in a Nashville hospital, colleagues hope for the day he can come back to work

Detective Scott Adcock fell asleep in his recliner Saturday and his wife was unable to revive him. He was taken to Centennial Medical Center in Ashland City, where his heart stopped for 12-15 minutes, said Police Chief Marc Coulon. Adcock was revived with CPR and taken by helicopter to Centennial in Nashville, he said.

A fund has been set up at Pinnacle Bank for his family: wife, Shannon, and sons Colby, 16, Matt, 13 and Austin, 10.

Coulon wouldn't discuss the doctors' outlook but was hoping it would be possible for Adcock to get back to work.

Crime is relatively low in Ashland City, but that's never stopped Adcock from pursuing every lead on every case, regardless of its magnitude, Coulon said.

"Anything he did, it thrilled him to bring it to a conclusion even if it was just shoplifting," Deputy Chief Kenny Ray said.

"It's hard to talk about him in the past tense," he said.

Doctors told the family that Adcock also has a staph infection, complicating matters.

Officer Jody Cantrell has known Adcock for at least 25 years, since before either became policemen.

"He lives his life at home, at work and with friends with more character than anyone I know," Cantrell said.

Adcock joined the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office in 1999 as a jailer, soon moving to the Ashland City department as a patrolman. He was promoted to detective in 2006.

Cantrell said he and Adcock visit Cheatham County Central High School math classes to tell students how the algebra they're learning applies to accident reconstruction.

"He was fun to do that with," Cantrell said, "and he will be again."

Golf tournament raises funds for Adcock

By Kelsie Penick • FOR THE TIMES • July 2, 2008                                                                      Twenty teams participated in this year’s benefit gold tournament held at Sycamore Valley Golf Course.

The tournament, hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police, kicked off at 8 a.m. on what turned out to be a bright, clear, perfect day for golf.

Finishing in first place was the team of Doug Boyd, Eddie Bumpus, Michael Gibbs and Peyton Gibbs.

Second place honors went to Ken Johnson, Chris Lewis, Mike Lewis and B.J. Stanfield while third place was captured by the team of Corkey Albright, Chuck Head, Richard Head and Charles Miller.

Golfers and volunteers enjoyed a delicious lunch and silent auction after tournament play. A number of door prizes were provided by Wal-Mart.

“I would like to thank the golfers, without them this tournament could not have happened,” said Curtis Bennett of the Fraternal Order of Police.

This year’s tournament raised $4,500 for Scott Adcock to help with medical bills.
Adcock was rushed to the hospital several months ago when a simple case of strep developed into a life-threatening illness.

Though Adcock has regained consciousness he is still unresponsive.
Physicians recently operated to put in a voice box in hopes he could speak to his family, but so far he is unable to speak.

The FOP wishes to thank the wonderful volunteers and businesses that helped to make the event a success including Wal-Mart, Harpeth Shoals Marina and Krispy Kreme.

Plans are in the works for another tournament next year with hopes that even more teams will participate.

The FOP and everyone involved in this year’s event requests that Scott Adcock, our hometown hero, and his wonderful family in their prayers through these difficult times.

Teams line up and begin to rev their engines to get things swinging.

    November 1st, 2008

This morning, I went over to finally meet with Mrs. Adcock, as we have never met before, and I was hoping I would be able to get an update on how Scott was doing.  So, here is the latest:

Scott is FINALLY HOME!!!!!!  It is so good to see that he is finally at home with his family, I do not know when he was brought home, but I am glad to see that he is close to the people that he loves, which is so important in a persons recovery.  He was awake when I arrived and in good health, he has also managed to lose a bit of weight (over 100 lbs). I understand he likes to lounge around in his chair (must be rough :))

I do know that the family is in need of a ramp for the front of their house to make it easier to get Scott in and out of the house for Dr appointments and the like. I am going to look around and see what I can find out to get it done for them, whether through an organization, or through donations and volunteers. A ramp is so much more than just some wood put together from point A to point B, it is also a means of freedom for people, an ability to get out and enjoy the things most of us take for granted. I think this would be an awesome gift for Scott, a cop who put so much into the people of his community, who believed in making wrongs right. If you have an ideas that can help make this happen, please e-mail me and lets make this happen.
